Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

16 Reviews on Tripadvisor

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a short trek that is known for its beginner-friendly trails and panoramic sunrise views of the Annapurna mountain range. From the Poon Hill lookout point, you can see some of the tallest mountains in the world including Annapurna I (8091 m), Annapurna South (7219 m), Dhaulagiri (8167 m), and Nilgiri (7061 m).

Only a short drive from the lakeside city of Pokhara, the trek begins in Nayapul and passes through terraced fields, forests, and charming villages. A special highlight of the trek is reaching Poon Hill for a spectacular sunrise over the mountains and valley.

Not only is Nepal known for its incredible Himalayan landscapes, but also for its rich culture and warm hospitality. You will be welcomed into the quaint, locally owned tea houses (small lodges) for the entirety of your Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. The tea houses have shared dining rooms where you can enjoy delicious local cuisine along with international dishes. The Gurung ethnic group of Nepal is the most prominent culture in the region.

The route itself is quite manageable; it has been well-established and is regularly maintained. This makes it an excellent choice for families, trail runners and beginners. Additionally, the elevation gain is reasonable, with the highest overnight elevation in Ghorepani at 2860 m above sea level and a maximum elevation of 3210 m at Poon Hill.

The short Ghorepani Poon Hill trekking itinerary also makes it an excellent option for anyone who has limited time in Nepal but still wants to experience the magic of the Himalayas. It is also an excellent addition to other treks in the Annapurna Region such as the Annapurna Base Camp Trek or the Mardi Himal Trek.

Pokhara is a widely popular destination for both local and international tourists because of its close proximity to the Annapurna mountain range. We highly recommend that you plan to include a few days in Pokhara to explore the city at the end of your trek. We can even arrange a Pokhara tour for you if you would like. If you are already in Pokhara, then we can easily remove the travel days between Kathmandu and Pokhara from your package and adjust the cost accordingly.

Himalayan Peace Treks is an ethical trekking company that arranges treks and tours across Nepal. We would be honoured if you considered trekking with us, so that we can show you what we love about the Himalayas.

Trip Information

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Difficulty

The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is (subjectively) not a difficult trek. The reason it is listed as ‘easy’ is due to its manageable elevation, short duration and well-maintained trails. The highest elevation is 3210 m at Poon Hill and you only sleep as high as 2860 m in Ghorepani, which means suffering from altitude sickness is unlikely. There are only 5 days of actual time spent on the trails in our itinerary and this can be condensed for an even shorter trek. Trekking to Ghorepani and Poon Hill is a good option for beginner trekkers, those who have never spent time at high altitude and children. People of every age have tackled this trek! Even though it is listed as ‘easy difficulty, it is still a trek in the Himalayas! So proper pre-training is important for some individuals.

Respecting Culture and Religion On The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

There are a few different ethnic groups present in the region, with the majority of people being Gurung. Hinduism and Buddhism are the main religions you’ll see represented along the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek. While trekking, remember that you are generously being welcomed into the homes and villages of local people. Please be mindful of the local norms in which modesty is standard and things like publicly changing clothes or urinating is not welcome. Please consider the culture when selecting what clothing to bring and keep public displays of affection to a modest minimum. When visiting temples, monasteries and sacred places, your knees and shoulders need to be covered and shoes removed before entry. Please only enter homes and kitchens when invited, and always ask for permission before taking photos of locals and their homes (a good idea anywhere!). For your information, the right hand is considered sacred, so try to use your right hand only for spinning prayer wheels, eating, and handing items, such as currency, to someone.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Packing List

We have a short trek packing PDF checklist that you are welcome to follow for your Ghorepani Poon Hill trek. The list is quite extensive and you can likely bring much less than it lists because the trek itself is only 5 days. The majority of trekkers heavily overpack for their first (and second and third) trek, so keep that in mind and do your best to pack light. Porters can carry a maximum of 20kg, which is 10kg per person. For a detailed explanation of the packing list, you can read more here.

Weather On The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Spring and autumn are when most people choose to trek in Nepal because there is a higher likelihood of clear skies, little precipitation, warm days and cool nights. You might be surprised to know that the day time can be quite hot and sunny, but the evenings and early mornings are chilly. When you get up early to hike to the Poon Hill lookout point, you’ll need to be bundled up. If you are trekking closer to winter (which is December to mid-February), then you are likely to get clear but cold weather. If you are trekking close to monsoon season (which is mid-May to mid-September) then you can expect to get wet! Regardless of the time of year, the mornings are generally clearer in the mountains and the clouds start to roll in after midday. Be prepared for any type of weather! In the case of extreme weather conditions, we might have to make adjustments to your trekking itinerary.

Food on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Tea houses along the way offer a variety of local and international cuisines. Be sure to try Nepal’s national dish, dal bhat, which is curry, rice and brothy lentil soup (and is flippen DELICIOUS). Also, everyone loves momo! Momo are Tibetan dumplings that are served with a spicy sauce or ketchup. International dishes include eggs, pancakes and porridge for breakfast and pasta, French fries and sandwiches for lunch and dinner. The kitchens are usually pretty great at accommodating those with allergies, kids, vegetarians and vegans. Of course, some cross contamination is possible in the tiny kitchens.

Dal bhat, Nepal’s favourite dish!

Accommodation on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Some are more simplistic with shared bathrooms and no electricity in the rooms. The dining halls are often heated but there is no heating in the guest rooms. Each bed has one blanket, but you might want to bring along a sleeping bag to keep you cozy and warm (they are easy to rent in Thamel, Kathmandu or Lakeside, Pokhara).

The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has recently updated the rules that all foreign trekkers must hire a licensed guide for treks in the Annapurna region, including Ghorepani Poon Hill. Guides are important for obtaining permits, setting the pace, booking tea houses, giving you insights into the culture and landscape and responding to emergency situations.

A porter is not a requirement (like a guide is according to the NTB), in order to complete the the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. If you have lots of trekking experience and are feeling physically and mentally confident, you likely don’t need one. Porters are recommended for anyone who is new to trekking, is nervous about the terrain or altitude, or is seeking more enjoyment instead of a challenge. Hiring a porter is a lovely way to support the local economy and have another staff member present in case of emergency.

Ghorepani Poon Hill is located in the Annapurna region of Nepal and is accessible from Pokhara, Nepal’s capital of tourism. Pokhara is a 7-9 hour bus journey or 25 min flight from Kathmandu. Ghorepani is the highest tea house stop on the trek which gives access to Poon Hill, the legendary lookout point. It is technically located in Myagdi District but is on the border of two districts, Kaski (Pokhara) and Myagdi (Beni).

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in Nepal for international trekkers. It offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, with relatively easy access from Pokhara. This makes it suitable for trekkers of all levels, including those with limited time (the trek usually takes 3 to 5 days) who still want to see the Himalayas up close. During peak trekking season you can expect more people on the trails which adds to the exciting atmosphere. Some people choose to avoid the crowds and trek during off-season.

Yes, trekkers need to obtain the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP permit) and the tTrekking Information Management System (TIMS) permit before starting the Ghorepani poon hill trek. This permit can be obtained to Kathmandu or Pokhara and will be taken care of by the Himalayan Peace Treks team.

Yes, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek can be customized to suit your preferences. If you would like a shorter trek, it can be completed in as short as two days on the trails (this requires an extremely speedy pace and it’s the easiest option). It can also be extended to have rest days, half days and more time in the mountains. It is an excellent trek to add onto other treks in the region such as the Mardi Himal Trek and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Yes, there is electricity at most tea houses but not necessarily in your room. Normally, tea houses have power outlets in the dining halls where people can charge their devices. Some tea houses charge you a few hundred rupees to charge your device. It is not uncommon for the electricity to go out unexpectedly, especially with rain or high winds.

Although we highly recommend using this golden opportunity to disconnect from the online world, there is wifi at most tea houses. Some tea houses charge a small fee in local Nepali rupees to access the wifi for the night. Similar to the electricity, the wifi is not predictable and can be slow or cut out at any time.

It is unlikely that you will experience extreme altitude sickness on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. The maximum overnight elevation is 2860 m and the maximum elevation is 3210 m. Mild altitude sickness symptoms can occur as low as 2500 m elevation for some people including things like headache, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping. The best way to maintain your good health is to walk slowly, drink lots of water and avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.

DO: ascend slowly, drink lots of water, monitor your symptoms and trek with an experienced guide
DON’T: push through severe symptoms, heavily consume alcohol, caffeinated drinks, or smoke cigarettes, take sleeping pills, ascend too quickly

Yes, a tourist visa can be obtained at immigration on arrival. Options include a 15 day visa for $30, a 30 day visa for $50, and a 90 day visa for $125. You can pay the USD equivalent in any major currency. Although credit cards are accepted, cash is recommended. If needed, you can extend your tourist visa at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or Immigration Office in Pokhara. The extension cost is a minimum of $45 for up to 15 days and then an additional $3 per day.

Yes, obtaining good medical travel insurance before you come to Nepal is necessary to trek safely and worry-free. Ensure that whatever insurance you get covers high altitude activities. You can send your insurance information to Himalayan Peace Treks so we can coordinate your safe return if there are any unlikely emergencies.

To pay for your trek you can bring any major currency ($€£¥). For spending money in Kathmandu and on your trek, you’ll need local Nepali Rupees (NPR) as Nepal mostly deals in cash. You can exchange or withdraw local rupees in Kathmandu. Once you venture into the mountains there are no reliable ATMs, so any cash you might need for the entirety of the trek (for snacks, souvenirs, gear replacement, etc.) needs to have been already obtained beforehand.

To pay your initial 15% deposit, you can send a money transfer (eg. Wise) or an international bank transfer. To pay for the remainder of your trek once you have arrived in Kathmandu, you can pay by cash (in any major currency). Any fees associated with a transfer or payment are your responsibility. All prices are listed in USD.
